my current obsession/june schwarcz

While I was printing in the darkroom the past few weeks I printed up this one for me. It is in June Schwarcz's bathroom. I can't stop staring at it. I love June's enamel piece in the upper left and the textile piece (wish I could remember who it is by!) on the right, but for some reason, I think the composition is made by that mirror and the fact that what is in the mirror is out of focus. What do you think?

  1. If I put my thumb over the mirror and look at the composition without it, it still works, because it has all of the right compositional elements.

The unfocused mirror, however, takes it from 'sound' to 'singing.' I stare at the mirror.

I love the wall outlet also - compositionally I think it's because it's a texture transition from the flowers, but also it reminds us that this place exists. It's functional.

I've just found your website and your blog - your photos are so beautiful! Thank you for sharing them.

  2. The mirror is incongruous, somewhat jarring at first, as if an industrial intrusion. But then, not really, because almost everything else in the photo has been manufactured. Anyway, I like the eclectic weight it provides to the more subdued colors and textures. It's funny, really. A loud counterpoint to the softer elements in the frame.
But ultimately the real elegance of the composition comes from the flowering branch, the beauty of which, even in its poetic subtlety, overcomes the brashness of the plastic and chrome mirror.
Thanks. I'll check back. Saw the piece about your new book in the Chronicle and wanted to see more of your work.
